I concur. Although I think there may be some older ones that have the coaches with the inner workings. I believe I have seen these in Muddy's and a few other videos.

The HIRO and Thomas both have the workings in the tender/Annie.
My recollection of the first blue Express Coach that I saw was probably a little darker blue now that I think about it. It was the sounds of the Japanese railroads and not a Thomas train. There were a couple of buttons I think on the roof and you could actually disconnect it from its train and run it with sounds on other trains. Looking at Hobby Search it looks like the James you have may have the sounds in the tender as you press on the coal load to activate the sayings. http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10248041a5/20/5

Yep, that's the one.
nice!! do the sounds go as they run, or do they have to be activated by pressing?

So far in the two I have tried they seem to cycle through the sounds/sayings. Although pushing the button does get to a different sound typically. I think Muddy mentioned too it may take awhile to get through all of them.
Can he run silent if you don't push the button on the tender?

Yes. The tenders/cars all appear to have a seperate switch/battery. Also they look to not have any wires inbetween. I may take one appart if I get some more time, but the two pieces appear to be independent.
Finally got them all out and running at once. So much chatter.. Big Grin. And I love it. Wish I knew what they were saying but is more fun to make it up as the go.

I turned the engine off on a couple and let them sit with the sound on. They do appear to cycle through that way without having to play the Thomas theme song over and over which plays when they are running.

While I do still love the TnA engines these are was less delicate and seem very well made. Having no wires is a major plus if you have kids. I wish there were more characters now.
I believe they are saying subliminal messages that translate to... "Buy More Plarail Trains"
