disneyland monorail playset

and here are some photos. a successful pick up yesterday thanks to a friend who was travelling that way and didnt mind the company.
the engine is yellowed due to age, but all seems to work well. a nice, slow moving piece. i look forward to displaying it publicly, but it will need to go on the floor.

please excuse the clutter in the photo... the layout is huge! as you can see, i even had to route it under my bed as it wouldnt fit!

closer up photo showing the little figures. they are teeny

our cat, silver, has a very curious nature and the box was too big a temptation when it came to exploring.

Its an awesome set. There is a few videos on YouTube of showing sped up mod versions as the only complaints I have seen for these sets is they are to slow. I love that set of characters as they are the hardest to find with Mickey. I have the sold separately Set #2 but the Disney characters are not the most famous ones like you have here. Wonder how this would look in one of the HO layouts at the club?

good idea, super. i think it might fit, size wise, but the amount of space needed would make it difficult to fit in.

a bit of an update here... i recently acquired the black stripe monorail, along with the majority of the contemporary station. the station is missing the viewing dome from the top, which is a shame, but i will try and put something in its place. the monorail is also missing a door, and came with most of the set #2 you mentioned, super.

the station is the same length as the monorail. i had no idea it would be so big!

the figs i got [also got set #1, minus daisy duck] this set is missing dale, brer bear, peter pan and pinocchio.

for the time being, the engine is stored in front of the lego cinderella castle. hoping to shift it to a safer spot eventually.

Yes, that is a drawback of these terrific Monorail sets, the large footprint needed for a layout. Maybe if the Monorail cars could articulate a bit more the curves wouldn't have to have such a large radius. Everything about these are so accurate including the looks of the rails and pillars. There was a time I was actively seeking one of those Contemporary Resort buildings to custom make a Monorail Station for the Plarail Monorails as I think it would work and look nice but the cost for one of those is quite high. May I ask you how long the building is? I still may try it though. I really like your display in the last picture, looks perfect with the Lego Castle. Is that display at the Club House?.

Nice mono-rail and I love the castle, always liked that but it does cost a pretty penny Smile

super, the station is around 637mm [around 2ft] long. the front walls where the track goes are 150mm tall, and the openings are 65mm wide and 90mm tall.
i dont think there would need to much customisation at all. tomy trains would easily fit through the openings, though i admit i hadnt thought about their monorails, just the regular flat-track.
one thing i would like to do is make some cardboard inserts that would act as platforms. it looks so empty when looking down through the top and seeing nothing but the track. since its a station/hotel, it needs patrons.

this set up is in my bedroom, lol. no way will that castle ever be transported except for moving house. while i would love to take it to shows, its too special for me to risk it either breaking or sticky hands pilfering pieces.
you are right, nigels... its an expensive set. likely the most i have spent on a single set of anything! plus add in the cost of the case and minifigs... yikes! so worth it though.
