The following thread is for those playing Dovetail Games popular train games "Train Sim World 3" and "Train Simulator Classic" for PC (via Steam) or console.
Train Simulator classic is the oldest game and are for hardcore train fans who want to experience being a real life conductor and that means traveling on hour or longer train rides to the next station and mastering your train and passing. While it uses the same engine from 2008, developers continue to find a way to push the limits and create awesome DLC to this day and there are no signs of slowdown.
Train Sim World 3 was released in 2002 and features better graphics but more of an arcade style and feel. While there are longer tracks, not as long as Train Simulator classic and it is more forgiving than Train Simulator Classic if you mess up. Also, a growing DLC library.
For those looking for Japanese lines, so far it's only on Train Simulator Classic.
* While diehards will order DLC directly from the creators, One may want to use STEAM to play their games due to the large number of sales they have all year long, esp. during the holidays.
NEW RELEASES:
Train Simulator Classic - U-Bahn Hamburg U1 from Just Trains
Train Sim World 3 - Norfolk Southern Heritage Livery Collection
